Flowers
A little series inspired by Wasfi, who came to dinner and brought flowers. Knowing the house well, she immediately began prepping them upon arrival. She carefully cut the stems, filled a vase with water and placed them in one by one. Once the display was perfect, she put them on the kitchen island next to another vase that featured flowers from the week before, already well into the process of wilting that would lead to their eventual death. As she placed the new, barely blooming flowers down she said “I think wilting flowers are much more beautiful than fresh ones”. Wasfi is the kind of person who speaks her mind, so when turned to me and said “you should photograph them” I obliged the very next morning. She too spent some time trying to get a nice iPhone shot, playing with angles on the kitchen counter and getting me to move day to day clutter out of the way. While everyone else was busy getting drinks or preparing food, we were engrossed by the beauty of dying flowers that in reality should have been thrown away before the arrival of a guest. It reminded me how important it is to keep your head up, your eyes open and to look for beauty in everything.
